RI: Anchor 7 | ACTIVITIES

CAPTION CREATION

Locate images or use text features from books that you have read with your class. To do this, you will take a picture with your phone and save it to your computer. Drop the image into the square and adjust by clicking on the image and pulling at the corners. Print and give to learners. Students will write a caption that helps tell about the information gained from the image. Post and have learners walk around the room reading each other's captions. Intended for grades 3-5.

AROUND THE ROOM

This activity may take two days to complete. Gather articles online from multiple sources and types of media. Create QR codes or print/ have a device for learners to watch at that center in the room. Students will gather information from each source to give an overall understanding/ explanation of the topic.

TEXT FEATURE MATCH

Print onto cardstock and cut. Place cards inside of an envelope. You will need one envelope per group. I recommend having no more than 3 learners per group to allow for discussion and collaboration. Have learners begin to match the feature to the name and purpose. Walk around and give feedback in order for learners to make corrections. Intended for grades 3-5.

READ WITH A PURPOSE

When we have a purpose for reading, we are more intentional with our thinking. Create a purpose prior to reading a text with learners. Have students respond using the space provided and based on your standard. Recommended for grades 3-6.

MATCH THE FEATURE

For this activity, take a text and begin my making photocopies of the pages. Be intentional of which pages you want to copy. You will need to cut and separate the text features from the text. I recommend gluing the text to colored cardstock for durability. Place the pages with text and the images in a bag or clip them together. Students will work in groups to match the text and feature together.  Pair this with participation cards from RL.1. Grades 3-6 grade.
