One of the most challenging aspects of teaching is having to create lesson plans each week! Today, I’m going to share with you my one simple trick to help you!
That is BUILD A STRUCTURE!
Your structure is this: A routine that develops a habit for your planning. This structure does not change throughout the year, but as you shift content focus, you can make slight adjustments to your lessons. My goal is to create a structure from the moment students enter my classroom to the point where they leave.
Why is this important?
The structure gives me the ability to know exactly what I need to plan. There is no reinventing the wheel each week.
#1: Having a structure helps you reduce planning time
Because I know that I have to have a message, warm-up, lesson, independent practice, and small groups, I am able to take these components and place them into my planner.
The structure of this makes planning a little more predictable.
I even have a structure to my small groups that I follow! The consistency and knowing of what to expect keeps me focused on the lesson objective and getting my lesson finished.
#2: It creates stability for you and your students.
One of the key factors that results in behaviors that are uncontrollable is when students don’t have a clear understanding of what they should be doing.
Creating a structure will build habits into your students, and lowers the questions on what students are doing each day.
Students will know the expectations and while you will still have some who try and pretend to not know what is happening, you will find that more and more of your students will embrace the consistency.
#3: Creates intentions with crafting lessons that are meaningful and well rounded.
One of the greatest challenges teachers face is the feeling of not having a clear picture for where they are going in their lessons.
The structure you create will force you to be intentional with your time and how you conduct your lessons.
